City flooded by torrent of Spring Festival tourists

Shanghai received more than 5 million tourists from home and abroad during the Spring Festival holiday, up 15 percent from last year, and they spent 6.6 billion yuan (US$980 million), city tourism authorities said on Sunday.

Total spending surged 34 percent, with the average spend by travelers staying overnight hitting 1,157 yuan per person daily, a rise of 6 percent.

Major tourist attractions welcomed 4.8 million visitors, a rise of 25.2 percent.

Shanghai International Resort saw 450,000 visitors during the holiday, a drop of 5 percent, while the Sheshan National Tourism Resort welcomed 270,000, up 28.5 percent.

A total of 84 museums in the city received 600,000 visitors, up 30 percent. The museums, together with 29 art galleries, hosted nearly 100 exhibitions. A Chinese Zodiac exhibition at the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum made it a popular stop.

Atthe Yuyuan Garden a colorful lantern exhibition is underway and Guyi Garden features a number of traditional cultural activities such as paper cutting and riddling, as well as dragon and lion dances.

The new 45-kilometer Huangpu riverfront received 4.3 million people. More than 520 Huangpu River cruise tours drew 125,000 tourists, soaring 50.7 percent from last year.

"The night view is brilliant and enchanting and it is an ideal way to enjoy a panoramic view of the metropolis when night falls," said Chen Dong, a tourist from neighboring Jiangsu Province who took a cruise tour with his family.

New suburban parks saw 48,000 visitors, many locals, while historical towns such as Fengjing, Qibao,Xinchangand Zhujiajiao were also popular. The hotel occupancy rate was 50.6 percent.

Shaoxing, Tonglu, Wuxi, Wuzhen andYangzhou were the top destinations for those heading off from Shanghai Tourist Bus Center, which sent21.3 percent more tourists on their way this year.

There were only 38 tourism-related complaints,according to the city’s 962020 tourism hotline, 28related to travel agencies.
