Chinese culture and classics for foreign readers

This year’s Shanghai Book Fair will highlight books on Chinese culture in English that will be of interest to foreign readers.

Shanghai Music Publishing House said on Thursday it will debut a book in Chinese and English on Chinese music throughouthistory in an informative and academic way.

The book, “Sounding China: A Companion to Chinese Traditional Music,” covers ancient Chinese musical instruments and compositions to contemporary avant-garde music adventures, with many rare archive pictures and classic recordings of famous Chinese musicians.

The author,Guo Shuhui, is a professor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and a leading scholar in the field of traditional Chinese music.

Chinese and English content goes side by side in “Sounding China: A Companion to Chinese Traditional Music.”

Meanwhile, Shanghai Translation Publishing House announced that from this year it will start to introduce a world academic classics series in English to include 105 titles ranging from philosophy, religion, anthropology, history, aesthetics to political science, economics, law and sociology.

The first 16 books of the series will make their debut at the book fair, including a translation of the Chinese classic "Dao De Jing" by Laozi.

This year’s Shanghai Book Fair will be held from August 14 to 20 at the Shanghai Exhibition Center.
