Shanghai traffic police have begun to contactmotorists who have a great number of traffic tickets unresolved.

After an early warning last week, the police announced on Wednesday that a late fee on unpaid traffic fines would be introduced from October 10.

On Wednesday, police approached a motorist surnamed Li who had 117 unpaid traffic tickets from April 2016.

Li, a delivery driver who lives in Hongkou District, owed 22,450 yuan (US$3,164) mostly for illegal parking and illegal lane changing.

On September 16, police stopped a man surnamed Chen who seemed to be driving a car connected to 113 traffic offenses.

It turned out that Chen was responsible for only 22 of the offenses, while the rest were made by others, police said.

Chen has already paid his fines of 4,100 yuan.

Earlier this week, the traffic police named and shamed 254 people with at least 100 unpaid traffic tickets. Top of the list was someone with 198 traffic offenses unresolved.
