Typhoon Mitag brought torrential rains and gale force winds to Shanghai on October 1 as the city celebrated National Day, causing some minor flooding and flight cancellations.

Weather authorities said Mitag made landfall around 8:30pm along coastal areas of Zhejiang Province, about 150 kilometers south of Shanghai. Rain intensified in the afternoon on Tuesday, with Fengxian District and the Pudong New Area raising typhoon alerts from blue to yellow.

More than 6,700 people were evacuated from coastal areas, as well as some 360 construction sites. At the city’s two airports, 362 flights were cancelled.

The city’s flood prevention authority reported that more than half of all 666 monitoring stations recorded precipitation over 25 millimeters in a 24-hour period, which is rated as heavy rain. Yangshan in Pudong recorded over 200 millimeters.

More than 10 streets and seven underpass were flooded in the city. Strong winds brought down 586 trees and flooded 1.83 square kilometers of farmland in suburban areas.

State Grid Shanghai Co dispatched over 5,500 workers and engineers to ensure stable power supply during the National Day holiday.

Tang Zhiping, deputy mayor of Shanghai, instructed all governmental bodies to pay extra attention to safety at public venues as the city held various events to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China.

“The potential threats of water-logging and falling objects must be addressed,” Tang said.

At 5:55am on Wednesday, Mitag moved north and its impact on Shanghai weakened. The weather authority lifted the heavy rain alert, but issued a blue gale alert for strong winds.
