City hospital gets smarter with robots
From:Shine  |  2019-11-20 19:29

A hospital building making full use of the latest smart technologies was unveiled at the city’s Renji Hospital on Wednesday.

The building, with laboratories, research centers and cancer institutes, is the first in the city to widely use a 5G smart robot management system.

Robots can greatly improve efficiency and protect medical staff, said officials at the unveiling ceremony.

“The whole building is like a super laboratory, where robots are seen in the lobby for guest registration and guidance, in the corridor for disinfection and cleansing and in the lift for chemical material transportation,” said Jin Guangyu, a hospital official. “The entire lab control system and remote communication system also use intelligence technology.

“The biggest advantage of robots is unmanned automatic operation. Staff are not needed for the process, while robots can calculate the disinfection time based on the coverage without any missing places. It is especially effective for labs and places with poisonous and harmful materials.”

Dr Yu Tao, Renji’s vice president, said: “Robots improve efficiency and help cut costs in time and manpower. The most important is it reduces potential harm and risks to medical staff.”

In 2017, the hospital began to use robots to deliver surgical material to operating theaters.

To date, they have taken the place of nurses having to walk some 2,300 kilometers, or the equivalent of over 8,500 hours. Time spent waiting for the delivery of surgical materials has been cut by 7 to 10 minutes for each operation, officials said, with zero errors.
