Shanghai Mayor Ying Yong shakes hands with Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev in Shanghai yesterday.

Shanghai Mayor Ying Yong met Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev in Shanghai yesterday.

Ying welcomed Patrushev, on behalf of the Shanghai municipal government and Shanghai people, to attend the sixth meeting between China and Russia on institutional cooperation in law enforcement and security.

Under the strategic leadership of President Xi Jinping and President Vladimir Putin, Sino-Russian relations are at the best stage in history, setting an example for good-neighborly friendship, sincere cooperation and mutually-beneficial relationship between big countries and neighboring nations, Ying said.

There are extensive exchanges between Shanghai and the Russian local governments. Shanghai and St. Petersburg became sister cities in 1988, and Shanghai later established friendly exchanges with Moscow and Vladivostok, Ying added.

The mayor said that Shanghai is willing to further strengthen exchanges with local cities in Russia, deepen cooperation in the areas of economy, trade, culture and tourism under the framework of the comprehensive strategic partnership of cooperation between China and Russia in the new era and the framework for consensus between the two heads of state.

Patrushev said that the current world situation is complex and volatile, and it is of great significance for Russia and China to strengthen cooperation. “I personally felt that Shanghai is a modern metropolis and it has retained historical buildings from different periods, which is impressive. We encourage local governments of Russia and China to strengthen friendly exchanges, deepen their understanding, deepen cooperation and achieve common development,” he added.

Deng Hongbo, deputy director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, and Andrey Denisov, Russian ambassador to China, also attended the meeting.
