Sterilizing at local airports kicks into overdrive
From:Shanghai Daily  |  2020-02-11 08:29

Shanghai’s two airports have begun continuously disinfecting their 30,000 luggage trolleys as part of new measures enacted to prevent the spread of novel coronavirus-related pneumonia during the ongoing travel rush.

Staff clean the trolleys’ handles with disinfectant after recovering them at the Pudong and Hongqiao airports.

They also spray the trolleys with disinfectant every hour. Six ultraviolet sterilizing machines work continuously to further disinfect them.

Trolley disinfection is just one of eight preventative measures implemented by Shanghai Airport Authority yesterday to ensure the safety of travelers and staff as people return to the city following an extended Spring Festival holiday.

Ventilation systems in airport terminals have also been enhanced, while some windows within the buildings are kept open to increase ventilation.

Subway trains shuttling passengers between terminals the at Pudong airport are disinfected once every three hours. The frequency has been increased from thrice a day ahead of the coronavirus outbreak. Air-conditioning filters in trains are also thoroughly sterilized.

Restaurants and stores in the terminals are disinfected at least three times daily. Employees receive temperature checks before serving customers.

Disinfection is also carried out at transport hubs, in shuttle buses and garages. All toilets, nursing rooms, elevators, escalators and public areas are disinfected every hour.

Check-in counters, information desks and seats in terminal buildings are sterilized three times a day, increasing to every two hours on peak days.
