Man sentenced for attacking community volunteer
From:Shine  |  2020-02-19 17:29

A man who assaulted a residential community volunteer over a dispute related to epidemic control measures has been sentenced to one and a half years in jail for provoking trouble, the Minhang District People's Court heard on Tuesday morning.

This is Shanghai's first case involving an attack on an epidemic prevention and control volunteer, the court said.

The trial was held online, with prosecutors, judges, the defendant and his lawyer speaking from their own workplaces.

According to the Minhang District People's Procuratorate, on January 31, the victim, surnamed Xu, was serving as a volunteer to implement epidemic prevention measures at the entrance of a residential compound. At around 3:30pm, a man surnamed Mao attempted to enter the compound in his car to visit a relative, named Ling.

However, under community rules to contain the epidemic, only the cars of residents in the compound were allowed inside. Xu explained this to Mao and asked him to follow the rules.

Mao then called Ling, who came to the scene with his wife. Ignoring the persuasions of security guards and onlookers, the couple disputed with Xu, abusing and pushing him.

During the scuffle, Ling pushed Xu to the ground, where he commenced to beat him, causing a fracture to Xu's lumbar vertebra and soft tissue injuries in several areas.

Due to his injuries, Xu couldn't participate in the trial. His representative said Ling never apologized nor expressed any regret to Xu after the incident. Xu, who is only 24 years old, will be laid up by his injuries for at least three months, according to his representative.

During the trial, Ling confessed to the crime and expressed remorse. He also stated his intention to apologize and compensate the victim. In hopes of securing a lenient sentence, his lawyer noted that Ling is a first-time offender who surrendered himself to police and regretted his behavior.

The court denied Ling's request for reprieve and explained that his actions severely endangered public security amid the epidemic outbreak.
