Construction restarted on Friday on a 3-kilometer tunnel beneath Wuning Road in Putuo District with strict coronavirus prevention measures in place for workers.

The project, which began in 2018, was suspended after the Spring Festival holiday due to the epidemic.

The four-lane tunnel is expected to largely relieve congestion onWuning Road.

On completion by the end of 2021, the road, linking the G2 Expressway and the Inner Ring Road, will become a major east-west downtown thoroughfare.

Multiple prevention measures are in place at the construction site. The construction management commission of Putuo has stipulated that all those from key epidemic regions, such as central China's Hubei Province, are banned from returning to work.

Other workers from outside Shanghai have to be quarantined for two weeks before entering the site. A separate dormitory has been built nearby for quarantined workers.

Officials with the district's health authority check temperatures, monitor workers' health, send meals and other daily necessities as well as offer psychological counseling to the quarantined workers.

The health condition of other workers is registered along with their travel over the past15 days. Everyone on sitemust wear a mask. They enter the site through facial recognition and temperature checks.

The first batch of 40 workers and managers who stayed in Shanghai during the holiday began work at the site on Friday. Another 21 workers from neighboring Jiangsu Province have arrived in Shanghai and are under quarantine.

Disinfection is conducted at least twice a day in offices, dormitories, canteen, toilets and meeting rooms.

A new round of redevelopment is being carried out on both sides of the road to attract all kinds of innovative sectors and platforms and create a better ecological system for innovation and entrepreneurship, according to the district government.
