An official with the Shanghai Administration for Market Regulation inspects a wet market.

A total of 66 pet shops, indoor farms and indoor animal display businesses inside city shopping malls have been closed since early this month to prevent spread of the coronavirus, Shanghai's market watchdog said on Monday.

Another 58 animal rearing and reproduction venues were put under quarantine since February 6 when intensive campaigns against wild animal trade irregularities were conducted by city authorities, the Shanghai Administration for Market Regulation said.

A total of 2,401 businesses involved in selling wild animal dishes or with names indicating wild animals or relevant products on e-commerce platforms have been removed, and more than 29,600 pieces of wild animal trade information were blocked, according to the administration.

In total, 105 e-commerce platforms in the city were ordered to remove information regarding wild animals, the administration said.

Six government authorities in Shanghai released a specific law enforcement action plan to crack down on the illegal trade in wildlife with wild animal breeding and reproduction venues, wet markets, supermarkets, catering businesses and websites particularly targeted.

The plan by the market watchdog, police, agricultural authorities, customs, greenery and public sanitation authorities and the cyberspace regulator requires the quarantine of wildlife rearing and reproduction areas and bans the transport of any wild animals or relevant products. Violators will have their business suspended and venue sealed off.

Wet markets, supermarkets, catering businesses and e-commerce platforms are banned from any kind of wildlife trade, according to the administration.

Sales of wild animals and relevant products are banned at farm produce markets, and restaurants and delicatessens are prohibited from making food from wild animals or related products.

Wild animal products are banned online platforms, and ads for hunting tools, and wildlife or related products are also not allowed, according to the administration.
