Shanghai Daily representatives (right) donate milk and bottled water to Guangfulin Subdistrict officials on Tuesday.

Shanghai Daily, together with four multinational companies and one state-owned enterprise, donated milk and bottled water to the Guangfulin Subdistrict in Songjiang District on Tuesday.

The 200 boxes of milk from Bright Dairy and 20 boxes of bottled water from Shanghai Shenmei Beverage and Food Co Ltd will go to staff working at a quarantine spot in the subdistrict and those under quarantine there.

The subdistrict has received 347 inbound passengers from overseas arriving in Shanghai since March 3. Among them, 108 underwent home quarantine, and 154 are still at the quarantine spot.

The quarantine spot received the first batch of inbound passengers on March 18.

"Medical workers, community staffers, police, hotel workers and volunteers are working at the quarantine spot day and night to ensure its safe and orderly operation," said Xue Yong, a subdistrict official.

People under quarantine at the spot of Guangfulin Subdistrict receive the donated milk.

"Those working on the front line of the battle against the coronavirus work very hard, and we will distribute the items to them first and people who are under quarantine as well," said Xue.

"The allocation of donated items will be based on the real demand," he added.

Shanghai Daily will also donate face masks to the spot and supply newspapers there every day.

Other donations on the way include facial masks from L’Oreal’s expert skincare brand MG and lipsticks, lip gloss, hand cream body lotion and healing jelly from Unilever’s Vaseline. Ten hotels in Shanghai under Marriott International will donate sets of hotel bath amenities.

People are informed of disinfection measures, regular temperature checks, and notices before they undergo quarantine at the spot, and they are able to contact medical workers round the clock, officials said.

If they order food delivery, their meals will be picked up and placed outside their doors by subdistrict staff.

Under a new practice in Shanghai announced on Monday, nucleic acid tests are conducted on all inbound passengers from overseas arriving in Shanghai before March 31 who have not yet received the tests and who are under quarantine for medical observation.

"We are collecting samples on 116 people at the quarantine spot for the nucleic acid test and the work will be finished within three days," said Xu Xianfeng, Party secretary of the Fangsong Community Health Service Center.

People under quarantine at the spot of Guangfulin Subdistrict receive the donated milk.

The Guangfulin subdistrict has 31,309 households with over 80,000 people. It is also home to Songjiang University Town with more than 83,000 students and over 10,600 faculty members.

The subdistrict has imposed strict prevention and control measures against the coronavirus pandemic with households screened more than 80,000 times since the outbreak and a daily report system in place.

At residential communities, the number of gates has been cut by almost half with a 24-hour shift at each gate for temperature checks and registration.

Psychological consultation and foreign language services are provided to those under quarantine at home.
