Accused toy counterfieters charged by prosecutors
From:Shine  |  2020-06-01 18:29

Twenty-two individuals have been charged for producing and selling knockoffs of Japanese toys worth more than 20 million yuan (US$2.8 million), the Huangpu District People's Procuratorate released on Monday.

According to prosecutors, two suspects named Weng and Hong opened factories in areas including Huizhou and Dongguan cities in Guangdong Province in 2016 and produced counterfeit toys under Japanese brands including Bandai and Megahouse.

These toys were then sent to stores in Guangzhou City for online and offline sale.

Last year, Huangpu police received a complaint from a victim who bought a fake Gundam figure and investigated the case. With the support of police in Guangdong, local police officers soon tracked down and apprehended the suspects.

This is the first counterfeit case uncovered in Shanghai which involves a complete chain of production, including model making, figure production, storage, transport and sales, the procuratorate said.

Police officers seized a large number of toys of Marvel heroes and Japanese anime One Piece characters in the gang's warehouses in Dongguan and Guangzhou.

An audit showed that the toys the gang sold and had in stock were worth over 20 million yuan.

The 22 gang members were charged with crimes of counterfeiting registered trademarks and selling counterfeits.

Prosecutors also made the gang return 2 million yuan as compensation for the involved brands' losses.
