Local pianist Luo Wei performs with singer Yan Hua at the Wisdom Bay innovation park in Baoshan on Tuesday.

An outdoor piano concert was held at Wisdom Bay innovation park in suburban Shanghai's Baoshan District on Tuesday evening as part of the district’s art and cultural offerings for the National Day holiday.

The “Meet the Sunset” concert was hosted by Luo Wei, a young pianist who is popular online for his original music about Shanghai landmarks such as the Bund, the Hengfu historical zone and the Yan’an Elevated Road.

On the terrace of his newly opened workshop, the Lowe Healing Music Studio, Luo performed the song he composed for the innovation park, the former site of Shanghai’s No. 3 Wool Textile Mill, which has been transformed into the city’s first scientific and cultural complex.

He performed together with singer Yan Hua and violinist Sha Xiaocao during the hourlong concert, which was offered free to the public.

Hundreds of visitors, mainly nearby residents taking walks after dinner, attended the show. Some medical workers who fought against the novel coronavirus pandemic in central China’s WuhanCity were also invited.

A resident surnamed Yang living in the neighboring Fuduyuan Community said he has witnessed great changes to Wisdom Bay over the last decade, from a derelict container yard into a popular landmark with museums, cinemas and nightlife market.

“It attracts a large crowd of visitors every weekend and the cultural atmosphere of the whole area has been lifted,” Yang said.

Baoshan has invited 17 famous artists like Luo to open studios in the district. Other artists include Gu Haohao, director of the Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe, conductor Cao Peng and writer Qin Wenjun. A theater named after Shi Yihong, a noted Peking Opera performer, has opened to the public in the bay.

The artists are encouraged to perform to enhance the cultural and artistic atmosphere of Baoshan, according to the district’s culture and tourism bureau. Nearly 100 cultural events are held across the district every year.

“The Wisdom Bay has a strong ambiance blending art and science,” Luo said. Seven artists including another famous pianist Song Siheng and popular singer Huo Zun have also set up studios in the park.

The innovation park at 6 Wenchuan Road was named as Shanghai’s first popular science park. It is home to the world’s only 3D printing museum, over a dozen artists' workshops along with over 300 global companies engaged in 3D printing, intelligent micro manufacturing, virtual reality/augmented reality and artificial intelligence robotics.

Hundreds of old containers have been converted into colorful offices for startup tech firms along the river. Over 15 historical factory buildings have been preserved to house a convention center, cinema, theater, indoor sports fields and wedding halls. Canteens, cafes, flower shops and bakeries operate across the complex.
