Extra trains from city's railway stations

Railway stations in Shanghai will operate 19 additional trains a day from Sunday toHangzhouin neighboringZhejiangProvince andYangzhouin neighboringJiangsuProvince, the China Railway Shanghai Group announced on Friday.

There will be nine extra bullet trains from Shanghai South Railway Station toHangzhou, which will increase passenger capacity by more than 6,000 a day, easing pressure on services from ShanghaiHongqiaoRailway Station and Shanghai Railway Station toHangzhou, the group said.

There will be additional trains from Shanghai Railway Station and ShanghaiHongqiaoRailway Station toYangzhou andNantong in Jiangsu Province, according to the group.

An extra train from Shanghai South Railway Station toQingyuan in Zhejiang Province will operate from Sunday to satisfy tourism demand, the group said.

In total, 588 trains will operate daily from Shanghai railway stations from Sunday, the group said.

Meanwhile, nearly 4 million railway passengers were recorded by the city’s railway stations during the National Day holiday travel rush, over 80 percent of the figure of the same period last year, the group said.

The rail travel rush for the eight-day holiday lasts 11 days, from September 28 to October 8.

On October 1, 563,000 people made rail trips from stations in Shanghai, a figure close to the daily record which was 596,000 on October 1 last year, the group said.

Railway stations in Shanghai operated an extra 260 trains to cope with the surging demand during the holiday, the group said.

The Shanghai-Suzhou-Nantongrailway, which opened on July 2, recorded 231,300 trips during the travel rush, with more than 70 percent of seats occupied on average during the holiday, it said.
