People lay flowers as tribute to Su Yu, a Chinese military leader, at Shanghai Fushouyuan Cemetery on Monday.

A special tribute ceremony to Su Yu (1907-1984), a Chinese military leader, was paid at Shanghai Fushouyuan Cemetery in Qingpu District on Monday.

A 2.3-meter-tall bronze statue was unveiled at the cemetery's New Fourth Army Square, as General Su served in the army. The statue took three years to complete and also features Su's wife, Chu Qing.

About 120 people including Su's family members, former army soldiers and officials of the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau and Qingpu District Civil Affairs Bureau laid flowers at the statue and commemorated Su with poems and songs.

During China's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-1945), Su led three famous counterattack battles: at Huangqiao, Cheqiao and Tianmushan.

Su's family donated spectacles and a watch used by Su to the Humanism Memorial Museum inside the cemetery on Monday. These items will be displayed to the public.

The New Fourth Army Square built in 2005, a red tourism base in Shanghai, also features statues of Ye Ting (1896-1946), a military strategist and the first commander of the New Fourth Army; and Chen Yi (1901-1972), Shanghai's first mayor and also a commander of the New Fourth Army.

On the square's memorial wall, the names of more than 7,700 soldiers of the army are engraved.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the victory of China's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
