The superconductivity industry will be a highlight of the city’s next stage of industrial development, according to the Yangtze River Delta Superconductivity Industry Development Summit Forum in Shanghai.

The cutting-edge technology has wide potential in power grid transformation, maglevtransport and major science facilities.

It is regarded as a new revolution in electric power science and technology, and countries around the world are accelerating research and development into the technology. China is no different.

After 20 years of effort, domestic researchers had invented high-temperature superconducting (HTS) power cables which have been put into use, becoming one of the industry’s leaders.

ChenMingbo, deputy secretary-general of the Shanghai government, said work should continue to build the platform, give policy support and launch pilot demonstrations to encourage companies to explore new applications and obtain core competencies in the industry.

A Yangtze River Delta Superconductivity Industry Alliance has been established, marking a great step forward in regional development and in Shanghai’s aim to become a science and technology innovation center with global influence.

The alliance comprises major research institutes and domestic enterprises such asOssenGroup, Shanghai Superconductor Technology and Shanghai Electric Cable Research Institute.

XuYibo, vice president of the Shanghai Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said experts, companies and authorities should work together to build the region into a new highland of the superconductivity industry in China and the world.
