The Pudong International Airport held the largest emergency drill in China’s civil aviation history on Friday to test its response capabilities amid the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The comprehensive exercise took place on the airport's No. 6 apron. China’s civil aviation regulator, the Civil Aviation Administration of China, sent a supervision team to guide the exercise.

The drill featured 12 simulated emergency situations, including a bomb threat, a plane going off the runway during landing and a fire aboard an aircraft due to a leaking lithium battery. The airport authority, rescue crews and other personnel all participated in resolving these emergencies.

Rescuers also practiced quarantine and coronavirus prevention measures, including the administering of nucleic acid tests, temperature checks, epidemiological investigation and quarantined transferring.

“The exercise was highly comprehensive and fully showed the airport’s emergency management capabilities amid the pandemic,” the Shanghai Airport Authority said.

Over 800 people from 14 organizations, including the airport, China Eastern, the airport police as well as the city’s fire prevention, health and police authorities took part in the drill. Among other vehicles, an Airbus 330 aircraft, three helicopters and over 100 fire engines and ambulances were used in the drill.

The operation of flights and passenger services via the airport was not affected, the airport authority said.
