The two astronauts on the Shenzhou-11 mission will be wearing clothes designed at Shanghai’s Donghua University.

After two decades of research, the university has come up with outfits suitable for work, exercise and leisure in space and during training on Earth.

They were designed not only for special functions, such as protection in a gravity-free environment, but also with Chinese characteristic elements.

Unlike the one-color suits worn by astronauts on previous missions, those worn by the two astronauts at a news conference on Sunday were in two shades of blue. They had an S-shaped arc on each shoulder, representing the trajectory of space flight, and V-shaped lines on the chest, representing victory. The lines also represent beauty and harmony.

The team at Donghua also designed the logos on the astronauts’ suits.

The clothes to be worn when they are in orbit look like ordinary everyday wear but have been carefully designed after physical and psychological experiments to ensure comfort and health.

Exercise clothing is also made in different shades of blue. The sleeves and trouser legs can be removed to meet different uses, while the fabric, which is excellent in transferring heat and humidity, is comfortable to wear while running or riding the stationary bike.
