The Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Infrastructure in the Welsh Government, Ken Skates recently led an economic trade and culture delegation to China. During their two days in Shanghai, they held exchanges with Chinese partners at the investment promotion meeting, visited cultural facilities and celebrated St. David's Day.

Trade and investment was one of the most important aims of the cabinet secretary’s first trip to China. The Welsh government opened its office in Shanghai in 2006. The Cabinet Secretary highlighted the fact that Wales possesses the best financial support policies in the UK. They look forward to maintaining long-term relationships with Shanghai and making growth in important areas such as advanced manufacturing, life sciences, finance and professional services, as well as the innovation industry.

Wales also has offices in Beijing and Chongqing, with a view to providing assistance to Chinese investment projects in Wales as well as supporting trade cooperation between companies in both countries. Currently, many Chinese companies are doing successful business in Wales, including Shunxi Cell, AcerChem UK and THTF. In addition, Wales established friendly-city relations with Chongqing in 2008.

As the Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Infrastructure, Ken Skates is also responsible for culture and public participation. During his trip to Shanghai, he visited the Shanghai Mass Art Center together with the people in charge of cultural organizations in Wales.

At the art center, the delegates were amazed by the city's intangible cultural heritage works, traditional clothes & accessories from the Ming and Qing Dynasty.  On display were also articles used in daily life in the 1960s and the 1970s, as well as books and toys from the post-80s generation.

Ken Skates described the exhibits as 'fantastic' and 'wonderful'. He was deeply impressed that the center provides ordinary people a professional display platform for arts and culture. There are no such places in Wales, and perhaps they will consider building a similar center.

Currently, Wales and China have a high level of co-operation in the field of culture, for example, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales toured in China in the last couple of years. The poems and stories of China's poet Li Bai (from the Tang Dynasty) have also been integrated into musical and dramatic works by Welsh artists.
