Rainfall today will bring the highest temperature down to 25 degrees Celsius, according to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

Last week, Shanghai was marching its way out of an early spring freeze. By midweek, the mercury had started to rocket day by day.

Last Saturday, it reached 31.2 degrees in downtown Xujiahui area — making it the hottest April 15 since 1897, when temperatures were first recorded in Xujiahui — the benchmark for Shanghai temperatures. Since the city began keeping records in 1873, spring temperatures have rarely reached over 30 degrees. The city first basked in such a temperature on March 20, 1933.

Forecasters said the recent heatwave was ushered in by a mix of sunshine, warm air and southwestern wind.

The temperature will soar again tomorrow, but is not likely to reach 30 degrees, forecasters said.

From tomorrow to Thursday, the high will remain around 25 degrees, with the low 16 degrees.
