Nursing home explores new way of operation
By:Wu Qiong  |  From:english.eastday.com  |  2017-08-14 08:56

Wangnianhui, a nursing home in Shanghai’s Putuo District, has adopted a new way of operation. It not only offers beds and services to pensioners, but also provides the younger generation with a lodging option.

The nursing home, located in a tall building near Zhenping Road, is divided into three parts: a hospital, a home for the elderly and a home for the young. To get a bed at the nursing home, young people have to work as a volunteer to care for the elders who live with them in the same building. Their volunteering hours are counted and can be used to deduct their house rent.

A total of 14 rooms are now being offered to voluntary nursing workers, including single rooms and double rooms.

To cater to the needs of young residents, there is a public space in the building for them to socialize and network with each other. Refrigerators, TV sets, treadmills and other basic facilities are also available to provide the occupants with necessary essentials.

Now there are seven university graduates living in the nursing home. They have not only found an affordable place to live in, but are living a more meaningful life by doing the volunteer work.
