Amid International Coastal Cleanup which falls on September 16 this year, more than 200 volunteers from Shanghai gathered to scavenge waste at a sea beach of Nanhuizui in Shanghai's east end.

Apart from clearing away rubbish from the beach, volunteers had to do recording work of categorizing, counting, weighing and identifying sources before statistics are sent to Shanghai Rendu Ocean Public Welfare Center, a public welfare organization which became China's first enterprise to take part in international beach cleaning activity in 2007.

A volunteer explained that recording such parameters will help make clear which sort of trash should be paid more attention to and which class counts most. "Medical waste is horrible and plastic waste and cans are the most usual wastes. In the past, fishnets and daily necessities were quite normal but have reduced over these years. This is the good change that we have seen, but protecting the ocean still needs the attention of all fields in society." said the man.

According to the sponsor of this activity, in the next week, more than 5400 volunteers from 47 volunteering groups will do cleaning along the coastline of twenty-two coastal cities in the nation.

First started by US Ocean Conservancy, an ocean protection institution, the annual International Coastal Cleanup on the third Saturday of each September has successfully been held for 32years and exerted widespread influence.
