Syrian poet Adonis wins Shanghai International Poetry Festival Award

The second Shanghai International Poetry Festival is to kick off in Yuz Museum from October, 7 to October, 11, during which a series of activities like communication between Chinese and foreign poets, poetry forum, poetry recitation, etc. are expected to be launched.

At a poetry evening party to be held during the period, Syrian poet Adonis will be awarded Golden Magnolia Award set up for the first time.

As the pseudonym of Ali Ahmad Said Esber, Adonis is a Syrian poet, essayist and translator who is considered as one of the most influential and dominant Arab poets of the modern era and has been for many years seen as a serious contender for the Nobel Prize for literature.

The first Shanghai International Poetry Festival was held in August of 2016. Since this year marks the 100th anniversary of the birthday of New Poetry in China, the organizers of the festival will showcase Chinese new poetry as a successful practice of cultural exchange between China and the world.

Meanwhile, the poetry history and current literature situation of countries in relation to the Belt and Road initiative will be uncovered and presented to the audience.
