An American actor named Matthew Knowles came to Shanghai one month ago, only to look for his late relative who, as evidence indicates, might be buried in the city.

The relative in question is the elder sister of Matthew’s grand grandmother named Laura Clark. As evidence shows, during the Second World War, Laura came to China and devoted herself to taking care of the wounded in a hospital in Wuhu, a city in South China’s Anhui Province, along with a group of missionaries. In 1943, she was imprisoned by the Japanese army in a concentration camp in West Shanghai, which is currently the site of Shanghai Yan’an Junior School.

Laura was repatriated to the U.S.A. after the surrender of Japan. However, with a deep love for the country, she returned to China and spent the rest of her life here.No one knows exactly how Laura died and where she was buried. As clues show, she might be buried in a graveyard in Shanghai. That is why Matthew chose Shanghai as the first stop of his search journey.

American actor Matthew is a familiar face to many people in China, thanks to his roles in a number of Chinese TV series, such as “Love Me If You Dare” (2015) and “Red Sorghum” (2014).
