Yangtze finless porpoise, a freshwater cetacean at the top of aquatic organism chain in the Yangtze River, is an important part of the biodiversity there. China is now making efforts to protect the biodiversity of the Yangtze.

An ecological scientific investigation of Yangtze finless porpoise, starting in Wuhan on November 10, aims at finding out how many finless porpoises in the Yangtze and investigating the environmental quality of their habitats in forty days.

It has been twenty days, and the team has investigated the natural population and distribution and recorded the conditions of the beach, shore, shipping, hydraulic construction and fisheries, and further analyzed their living environment.

The finless porpoise population has increased in some sections of the Yangtze, and that, however, in some other sections, has sharply reduced. Preliminary findings also show that human's busy development activities along the Yangtze River, such as shipping seriously affected the finless porpoise.

The investigation targets at arousing the society to protect Yangtze finless porpoise and avoiding repeating the tragedy of baiji which is functionally extinct.
