Shanghai’s Metro network has expanded once again, with Metro Line 17 expected to be in place by the end of this year.

Covering a distance of 35.3 kilometers and 13 stations, the new line will run from Minhang District to suburban Qingpu. It will also include interchanges to Lines 2 and 10, with terminal stops at Hongqiao Railway Station and Oriental Land. The new line will no doubt make Zhujiajiao Water Town, Qingpu New City, Zhaoxiang Commercial Center, Xujing Town, National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai), Hongqiao Transportation Hub and other important areas in the region much more accessible.

Subway stations on Line 17 are nice to look at. For the first time ever, Zhuguang Road Station offers a sun-filled space with a skylight window in the ceiling. Featuring the elements of water towns, the station provides a visually enriching experience for commuters. There is also a giant installation of ceramic art on the wall. Being 80 meters long and three meters tall, the art wall is the largest one among Shanghai’s metro stations.

Another station on the line, Zhujiajiao Station, is themed to the Zhujiajiao Water Town, one of the four historical towns in Shanghai. Its ceiling and walls are decorated with square-shaped panes and present the scenes of a modern water town.

It is also noteworthy that all the stations on Line 17 are coated with negative oxygen ions, which can store energy and release negative oxygen ions for a more comfortable interior environment.
