Shanghai’s ‘two sessions’ begin this week

Shanghai is on an occasion of “two sessions” this week.

The first session of the 13th Shanghai Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) kicked off at the Grand Hall of the Shanghai Expo Centre on Monday, Jan. 22. The 15th Shanghai Municipal People’s Congress will have its first plenary meeting on Jan. 23.

On Monday morning, Wu Zhiming, chairman of the Shanghai Committee of CPPCC, delivered a report in the presence of the delegates. Li Yiping, vice chairman of the committee, gave a speech about the proposals put forward during the past five years.

According to Li, a total of 4,583 proposals have been submitted over the recent five years. Among them, 41.88% were about social development and 32.97% were associated with economic development. Issues concerning people’s livelihood have continuously been the focus of Shanghai’s political advisers. More than 2,000 proposals were associated with topics such as employment promotion and improvement of the elderly care service, the housing security system, educational reform and environmental protection, as well as building an ecological and habitable city.
