Shanghai’s forest areas cover 16.2 pct of land

Statistics show that as of 2017, Shanghai's forest land area has reached more than 1.7 million mu, equivalent to 46 times the size of Huangpu District and forest areas covered 16.2 percent of the city’s land, with forest parks, country parks, water reservation forests and coastal shelter forests constituting its urban forest ecosystem.

Shanghai’s forests are mainly distributed in the suburbs. The area of forests in the suburbs, a quarter of which is in Chongming island, accounts for 96.4% of the total forest area in the city. With public greenbelts and avenues that meet the forest standard contained, in the most prosperous central urban areas, the forest coverage is over 10%.

Since the “Thirteen Five-year Plan”, forestry in the suburbs of Shanghai has entered a leap-forward development stage. Four national forest parks, namely Sheshan National Forest Park, Dongping National Forest Park, Haiwan National Forest Park and Gongqing National Forest Park have been built and a series of country parks like Qingxi, Pujiang, Changxingdao have opened to the public. Fruits forest which accounts for an important proportion in Shanghai’s forests economy achieves a total output value of about 2.3 billion yuan in 2017.
