Photo exhibition showcasing Shanghai’s achievements in 40 years of Reform and Opening up unveiled in Cuba

The exhibition was unveiled at the National Theater of Cuba

Hosted by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government and the Chinese Embassy in Cuba, and jointly organized by the Foreign Affairs Office of Shanghai and eastday.com, the Photo Exhibition on Shanghai’s Achievements in 40 years of Reform and Opening up was unveiled at the National Theater of Cuba on July 14.

Nearly 100 photos were showcased during the exhibition to highlight Shanghai’s achievements made over the past 40 years in various fields including economy, urban construction, environment protection, technology and education and people’s livelihoods, as well as to display Shanghai’s push to enhance “Shanghai Services”, “Shanghai Manufacturing”, “Shanghai Shopping” and “Shanghai Culture”.

Photos of Shanghai reflecting both past and present captured the eyes of the visitors. George, head of the National Theater of Cuba, praised Shanghai as a beautiful city and expressed his wish to visit the city in person in the future. Lizandra Estrada Cruz, a fifth-grade elementary student who enjoys watching Kung Fu Panda and Chinese characters, pointed at the photos of Shanghai Pudong Airport and was amazed by the size of the airport. Leonardo, a representative at the Sao Paulo Forum held this month, was also present at this exhibition. He once visited Shanghai and was very pleased to see those photos on display in Cuba.

Visitors’ eyes also lingered on such photos as the Cuba Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo, José Marti's Statue in Jing'an District and The 170th anniversary of a Chinese presence in Cuba.

The National Theater of Cuba was also tinged with Haipai Culture (East-meets-West Shanghai style) on that night. The first Haipai arts exhibition in Cuba by Li Shoubai, an inheritor of Shanghai's intangible heritage and a paper cutting master, was also held concurrently. 14 artworks, including heavy-color paintings and paper cuttings were displayed during the exhibition.Li Shoubai and his daughter, two generations of inheritors of Shanghai's intangible heritage ofHaipai paper cutting, showcased their artistic creations together during the exhibition.

A total of eight cultural performances were also presented during "Shanghai Night" later, including the dance drama brought by Shanghai Dance Theatre. The Photo Exhibition on Shanghai’s Achievements in 40 years of Reform and Opening up will last 7 days for the Cuba leg before moving on to Panama and Peru afterwards.
