Hundred-year-old garden reopens
By:Zheng Qian  |  From:english.eastday.com  |  2018-11-04 18:02

After five months’renovation and expansion, the second phase of Kunshan Garden in Shanghai is now open to the public.

Consisting of a themed area of ancient trees and another exhibiting history, the expanded garden is open 24 hours.

Kunshan Garden, located at No. 13 Kunshan Garden Road, was founded in 1895 and first opened in 1898. Originally called “Hongkou Garden”, it has been one of the most historically profound gardens in Hongkou District of Shanghai.Since it adjoins several historical buildings, including the former residence of Chinese writer Ding Ling (1904-1986) and a typical modern porch building with a Queen Anne style of British architecture, the garden sustains the city’s cultural and historical roots.

Having demolished the surrounding restaurants, washrooms and the old teaching buildings of Hainan Middle School, the second phase of the expansion and reconstruction project has expanded the park area from 3,024 , to 5339 square meters, based on the principle of retaining the British style and the layout achieved in the first phase of renovation in 1999.
