This Thursday, a special group of guests arrived in Shanghai and visited Shanghai’s Zhabei No.3 Primary School. Students from Hong Kong’s Wong Tai Sin Government Primary School spent a memorable afternoon with their Shanghai friends.

To welcome the first batch of “One Root, One Heart – Mainland Learning Tour Group for Hong Kong Primary and Secondary School Teachers and Students” in 2018, students at Zhabei No.3 Primary School hosted an excellent welcoming ceremony and delivered performances, including dragon and lion dance, chorus, kung fu, and campus drama. A pair of the campus mascots named Yangyang and Cancan was gifted to the guests.

After the ceremony, the Hong Kong students were shown around the school. According to the student tour guides, their Shanghai school is like a city, a place under students’ autonomous administration. Many decorations in the school building are designed by the students themselves.

Later in the afternoon, students from Hong Kong experienced a Chinese language class. Sitting next to local students, they learned a lot about Peking Opera and Chinese bridge culture by reading the stories of Mei Lanfang and Zhaozhou Bridge.

To the excitement of many Hong Kong pupils, they were invited to take part in the school clubs, where they learned seal carving, calligraphy, stone painting, and dragon and lion dance with their Shanghai peers.

At the end of the day’s learning tour, Shanghai and Hong Kong students made friends with each other. Both developed a strong interest in each other’s city and culture. They exchanged their WeChat accounts with each other. A Shanghai girl told the reporter, “When I go to Hong Kong, I will visit my little friend!” Many Hong Kong kids said, “I love Shanghai!”

The “One Root, One Heart” learning tour is organized by the Hong Kong Education Bureau, with an aim to expose Hong Kong students to the history, culture and economic development of the Chinese mainland so as to develop a shared understanding of the country and be confident in their motherland’s future. From this November to January 2019, around 2,200 Hong Kong students and teachers in total will pay visits to Shanghai.

The “One Root, One Heart” program is supported by the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, as well as education bureaus in Pudong, Minhang, Changning, Yangpu, and Huangpu districts. The Hong Kong student touring group in Shanghai is the largest since the Expo 2010. More than 5,000 Hong Kong students have participated in the program and made friends with their peers in a total of 70 schools across the city.
