By:Xu Yiran  |  From:english.eastday.com  |  2019-01-09 09:44

According to the rule of online tickets sale, January 6 was the first day that people could buy train tickets for February 4 (the Chinese New Year’s Eve). Tickets from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station to Zhengzhou, Hefei, Chongqing, Nanchang and other destinations almost ran out only 10 minutes after sales started.

China Railway Corporation forecasted that 413.3 million people would travel by rail throughout China during this year’s Spring Festival travel rush, which means an increase of 31.8 million (or 8.3%) year-on-year and an average of 10.3 million passengers per day, setting a new record for the Spring Festival Transport in previous years.

According to China’s official website for booking train tickets, 12306.cn, sales for a New Year’s Eve’s departure from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station began at 13:30 on 6th January. Tickets to some popular destinations, whether it is business-class, first-class or second-class, were all sold out in only 10 minutes. For example, by around 13:40, tickets of G1970, G1802, G974 and G360 to Zhengzhou were all sold out. So were tickets to Hefei, Nanchang and other popular destinations.

Sales of New Year’s Eve’s tickets from Shanghai Railway Station began at 14:30 on Jan 6th. According to the official website, there are still some remaining tickets to Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan and Chongqing. However, some of them are for trains which will travel overnight, which means people taking those trains cannot arrive on New Year’s Eve. For example, K290 departure from Shanghai Railway Station at 8:51 am on 4th February will take 33 hours and 39 minutes to Chengdu, so travelers who take this train will arrive on the evening of 5th February.

As a result of rushing home for a reunion dinner, tickets for February 3 or even a few days earlierfor general-speed trains to popular destinations such as Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan and Chongqing were almost sold out, with only a few standing room only tickets left.

Tickets on New Year's Eve from Shanghai to Anhui, Beijing to Henan, Guangzhou and Shenzhen to Nanning were very popular. Trains setting off at around 10 a.m. on New Year's Eve were even more popular, and they were sold out in 5 minutes after sales started.

According to the data, tickets for trains arriving within three hours were the most popular. "Usually, long-time travelers leave earlier, and 60% of those who leave on New Year's Eve are travelers in the ‘three-hour arrival circle’," said a staff member of Ctrip, a leading online travel agency.
