The 2018 National Science and Technology Awards ceremony was held in Beijing on Jan. 8, 2018. A total of 285 scientific breakthroughs were honored at the ceremony of which Shanghai took a leading role, with forty-seven projects involving local scientists, or 16.5% of the total, claiming national awards. Shanghai has scooped up more than 10% of the awards for 17 consecutive years. The 47 honors included three awards in the natural sciences, seven in technological invention and 37 in science and technological progress.

Shanghai-produced “Discovery” documentary series watched in more than 40 countries

Two of the science and technological progress awards won by Shanghai were granted to recognize science popularization efforts. The Shanghai Science and Technology Museum was awarded for its series of documentaries featuring endangered animal species unique to China.
The museum has so far filmed 14 episodes for the series since 2009, which cover endangered species in China. Among the finished 14 episodes, six of them – the Chinese Giant Salamander, the Yangtze alligator, the Reed Parrotbill, the Blue Sheep, the Amphioxus and the Sichuan Golden Monkey - were selected to compete for the award.
Various filming methods and computer graphics technologies have been used in this series of documentary films to add powerful visual effects along with artistic touches to the presentation.
“Everything we film is real and intended to promote science education,” said Wang Xiaoming, director of the museum.

The documentaries have been broadcast on such mainstream channels as CCTV 9, the Documentary Channel (Shanghai), TVB (Hong Kong), and the Discovery Channel (U.S.) as well as other local channels, internet media and public venues in more than 40 countries - including Australia, New Zealand, Russia, India, and Malaysia.

Another award in the science education category was given to Shanghai East Hospital. The hospital has created China’s first comic books that provide information on safety precautions and escape methods in 15 disaster scenarios, including earthquakes, tsunami, fire, traffic accidents and mudslides.
