According to a news release from the Shanghai
Education Commission, a total of 60,870 foreign students from 185 countries and
regions are now studying in 42 Shanghai colleges (or scientific research
institutions). Among them, 45,830 students are enrolled in long-term programs,
while 22,130 students are studying diploma courses. It is worth noting that 30,380
students, half of the total, are from 72 Belt and Road countries.
It was also revealed that the commission has
been pushing ahead with efforts to develop exemplary courses delivered in
English for foreign students since 2003. Currently, a total of 404 courses,
covering 12 disciplines and 60 majors, have been developed and 35 of them
are recognized as “Nationwide Elite English-taught Courses for Foreign Students”.
The elite courses are one of the important factors in attracting foreign
students.
In the future, Shanghai colleges will upgrade those exemplary courses by further leveraging the Internet
Plus model to boost innovation, as well as by establishing
a courses and degrees development center for foreign students to create more
specialized and internationalized courses.
