Time travel to the Forbidden City
By:Wu Qiong  |  From:english.eastday.com  |  2019-02-14 10:03

Even though the Chinese New Year holiday has come to an end, many people are still immersed in the joy of the festival. To put it another way, they do not want to say goodbye to the Spring Festival. If so, why not travel back in time to an active Forbidden City to experience the festive atmosphere?

Citizens can go to Shanghai’s Jing’an district to take a glance at the “Spending the Spring Festival in the Palace Museum” immersive digital experience exhibition, hosted by the cultural products and services team of the Palace Museum.

Multimedia technologies like digital projection, real-time image capture, and virtual images will help you engage in a variety of interactive experiences with ease. For instance, you can make an auspicious beast from “snow” just by waving your arms in front of a projection. The greater force you use when swinging your arm, the faster the snow beast will form. This game takes inspiration from a scene when children made snow lions in the Forbidden City during the reign of Emperor Qianlong (1735–1796).

Behind a special curtain, visitors can see a pair of door guardians. Through facial recognition, people can manipulate the facial expression of the guardians to match their own. Door guardians in Chinese folk tales are used to protect against evil influences or to encourage the entrance of positive ones. Thanks to technology, the stately-looking guardians can look more amicable, smiling or blinking, as the game player’s expression is projected to the guardians’ faces.

In the exhibition area, there is also a wide range of cultural products presented by the Palace Museum. By scanning a QR code, people can log into an online store to pick their favorite products.

With no admission fee, the exhibition will last through February 26. The venue is on the lower ground floor of CITIC Pacific Plaza at 1168 West Nanjing Road, Jing’an District.
