New bilingual dictionary to promote international exchange
By:Zheng Qian  |  From:english.eastday.com  |  2019-02-15 11:17

At the beginning of the Chinese lunar new year, Zhang Shihua, a former professor of Shanghai International Studies University who has been retired for many years, finally finished the revision work of his widely acclaimed "Concise Italian-Chinese and Chinese-Italian Dictionary" after a decade-odd effort.

The new edition has added about 66,000 words, making it the largest Italian-Chinese bilingual dictionary in the world.

The selected new words and meanings reflect the dynamic development of current languages. With accurate and standardized interpretation of each word and examples taken from an authentic corpus (a body of real-world language usage), the dictionary is more conducive for understanding. Beyond that, the Chinese interpretations are marked with pinyin to meet the needs of both Chinese and foreign readers.

According to Zhu Yuhua, the president of the China-Italy Association in Shanghai, who received one of Prof. Zhang’s revised dictionaries, it marks a big event for the Italian language. Skimming through the dictionary, he was filled with emotion and appraised that the Sino-Italian relationship has a long origin.
