The China International Industry Fair (CIIF) 2019 which is ongoing in Shanghai has been a stage for various robots developed by universities.

Hexapod Robot

In the exhibition area of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, a six-legged robot attracted a large number of exhibitors. It was developed by a team led by Professor Gao Feng from the School of Mechanical and Dynamic Engineering. Unlike the common crawler or wheeled robots, the hexapod robot moves on its six legs.

Zhao Yue, a doctoral student at the School of Mechanical and Dynamic Engineering, said that compared with other common robots, hexapod robots can better adapt to complex road conditions and even play a role in fire-fighting, earthquake relief work and other emergencies. Characterized by its stability and dexterity, the latest robot can climb stairs freely. In addition, it features a relatively larger capacity of effective load.

Intelligent delivery robot

With the voice notification,“Your express has been delivered by Robot XXX. Please go downstairs in 5 minutes to collect it”, a lovely robot will send steaming hot food to your door from takeaway restaurants. Developed by a team from Fudan University called RoboWay, the third generation of intelligent delivery robot, the “Blue Friend”, officially debuted at the CIIF.

It is reported that the “Blue Friend” entered an operational stage on campus on July 10. After the information of orders is received, the optimal path will be planned in the background scheduling system of the robot before it starts working.

The “Blue Friend” has an autonomous multi-sensor navigation system, with high-precision modeling, recognition ability, obstacle avoidance and other functions to adapt to the surrounding environment. In the case of road congestion, the robot’s backstage dispatching system can automatically switch its routes.

Last September, the first-generation prototype RoboWayR1, which successfully completed the first delivery on campus, appeared at the 2018 AI Conference. Now, the “Blue Friend”, the third generation, is smaller in size and easier to carry compared with the last two generations. Meanwhile, it has also been upgraded to optimize its positioning, mapping, planning, scheduling and interacting abilities.

Hotel service robot

Robots for hotel baggage delivery, hotel reception desk service and restaurants appeared in the exhibition area of Shanghai Second Polytechnic University.

These three hotel intelligent service robots are of an interdisciplinary design, which was completed by students from three different specialties in three faculties.

A series of related patents are being applied for now. In the near future, people will enjoy the services of these intelligent robots when they check in at hotels.
