Albanian student in Shanghai safeguards community against virus
By:Zheng Qian  |  From:english.eastday.com  |  2020-02-17 14:13

As all communities across China are under an anti-epidemic entry restriction amid the raging coronavirus epidemic, foreign volunteers remaining in Shanghai are taking an active part in the battle of their communities.

Lu Haiyan, an Albanian student from the Shanghai Ganquan Foreign Languages Middle School, is one of the supportive foreigners.

As soon as Lu saw the volunteers recruitment notification released by the Putuo District Red Cross, she told her mother her desire to join. Although worried about her safety at first, she finally agreed with the daughter’s decision due to her insistence.

Lu started her job of taking the temperature of residents going in and out on January 31 beside the entry of the second residential area of Zhenxi New Village, Putuo District.

“At the beginning, I was a little bit worried that residents would not be co-operative,” said Lu. Fortunately, everyone was cooperative.

Although it was chilly standing at the ventilated gate and she had to drink or go to the washroom as little as possible so as to avoid the cars congestion, Lu signed up again after her first day’s work.

In consideration of her age, the Red Cross didn’t arrange for her to work on the second day, but the girl signed up again and again. Till now, she is the volunteer who has served the longest hours for the Red Cross.

“Helping others is simple. As long as I can, I will keep doing so,” said Lu.
