Promoting sustainability, IKEA stays committed to Chinese market

Having vowed to remain committed to the Chinese market, Swedish retailer IKEA announced that it will be using recyclable materials for all products by 2030 and it will promote the idea of sustainable development in China.

Despite the pandemic in 2020, a prominent performance was still achieved by the company’s Purchasing and Logistics team in East Asia, after it optimized its internal processes and drove the work and production resumption of upstream and downstream suppliers, making contributions to the quick recovery of China’s manufacturing industry as a whole.

China is now one of IKEA’s most important markets around the globe and its largest sourcing country. As the global furniture retail giant said, it will further develop its supply chain in China and make it more sustainable.

The connection between IKEA and China’s supply chain dates back to 1990, when China’s economy was in transition and entered an era of rapid development. Purchasing offices were successively set up in Qingdao, Shanghai and Shenzhen, as the start of IKEA’s investment footprint in China.

Since 2000, IKEA has decided to buy more from China and has been seeking better suppliers to work with. The number of its suppliers in the country has risen from 25 to over 400 and it is now purchasing 37 categories of products and services from the huge market. In China, it has built a complete supply chain system ranging from R&D, to testing, storage and logistics. Statistics show that its output in China has grown from seven million to one billion pieces per year.
