No more confusion over Baijiu’s English translation
By:Zheng Qian  |  From:english.eastday.com  |  2021-01-15 10:41

The Chinese General Administration of Customs agreed to change the English terminology of Chinese liquor in the Customs catalog to “Chinese Baijiu”, announced the China Liquor Industry Association.

Instead of “Chinese distilled spirits” in previous catalogs, the 2021 Import and Export Tariffs of the People's Republic of China, implemented on January 1, adopted “Chinese Baijiu” for the category.

Alcoholic beverages can be classified into three categories: beer, distilled spirits or liquor, and wine. Distilled spirits are divided into varieties like Chinese liquor, whiskey, vodka, brandy and rum. Therefore, in the past, Chinese liquor was often literally translated as "Chinese distilled spirits". Other translations like "liqueur","liquor" and "spirit" are also not standardized.

In the College English Test Band 4 in September 2020, students were required to translate a sentence meaning Moutai is the best Chinese liquor. Various translations of Moutai, like “white water","white beer" and "white wine", were given.

Therefore, the officially named “Chinese Baijiu” has caused a sensation among those examinees, who will now know how to translate the most famous Chinese distilled spirit into English
