Shanghai is expecting the world’s largest immersive theater in the coming years.

That was announced by Zhao Chongyi, vice chairperson of Puy du Fou Asia. In addition, the China headquarters will be situated in Shanghai.

Meaning “maniac’s country” in English, Puy du Fou is a French historical theme park and has been voted the best theme park in the world. Sending people straight back in time, the Puy du Fou experience is very different from other theme parks.

On May 20, an agreement was inked between Puy du Fou and Xuhui District to present an immersive performance project, so as to transform the old West Hall of the Shanghai Everbright Convention and Exhibition Center into the world’s largest immersive performance theater with a total area of 46,000 square meters. With a total investment of 500 million yuan, the theater is expected to open in June 2022.

Once it is completed, the theater will stage shows from afternoon to evening, with each show lasting three hours, according to Zhao Chongyi. In the performances, the actors will approach the audience as much as possible, and the bilateral interaction will present an all-round experience.

“After the first theater is settled in Shanghai, we plan to build two more in other core cities in China,” added Ms. Zhao. By then, shows in different cities will be a series and impatient audience members can travel to other cities to see what happens next.
