SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- The Indian army claimed on Monday it had foiled a major infiltration bid along the Line of Control (LoC) dividing Kashmir by killing five militants.

The infiltration bid as per Indian army officials was foiled in Machil sector of frontier Kupwara district, about 165 km northwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

According to Indian army spokesman Col. Rajesh Kalia, the group was trying to infiltrate deep inside Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"A major infiltration bid was foiled today on LoC in Machil sector during which five infiltrators were killed," Kalia said. "Five weapons have been recovered from the spot."

LoC is a de facto border that divides Kashmir into India and Pakistan controlled parts.

A guerilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989. The gunfight between the two sides takes place intermittently across the region.

New Delhi blames Islamabad for infiltrating militants into Indian-controlled Kashmir. However, Islamabad denies the charge saying it only provides moral and political support to Kashmiris.
