AMMAN, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- Around 8,037 Syrian refugees returned to Syria from Jordan in 2017, according to figures released by a UN agency on Wednesday.

The figures, a copy of which was obtained by Xinhua, indicated that over half of those returned in the three months following the 9 July ceasefire signed between Jordan, Russia and the United States.

In December, a total of 375 refugees spontaneously returned to Syria from Jordan maintaining the decreasing trend from previous months, according to the UNHCR.

"In absolute figures, we are still talking about very small numbers when compared to the total registered Syrian refugee population in Jordan 656,692," the agency said in the statement.

In July 2017, Jordan, the U.S. and Russia agreed that the ceasefire aimed at permanently de-escalating the tension in southern Syria, ending acts of hostility, restoring stability and allowing free access of humanitarian aid for this key area in Syria.

According to official figures, the overall number of registered and unregistered Syrian refugees in Jordan stands at about 1.3 million.
