KHARTOUM, June 25 (Xinhua) -- South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit and the opposition leader Riek Machar started a new round of peace talks on Monday in Khartoum, in renewed efforts to peacefully settle the conflict in their country.

The talks were held under the patronage of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir and in the presence of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.

"History will record success or failure for us as the leaders of the region in general, and for you, the leaders of South Sudan in particular, with regard to resolving this crisis," said al-Bashir ahead of opening session of the talks.

"There is need to rise above personal interests for the benefit of the South Sudanese citizen," he said.

The Sudanese leader vowed to provide "all necessary facilities" to make the talks successful and help reach a peaceful settlement for the crisis in South Sudan

Mayardit, for his part, reiterated his commitment to work for the settlement of the conflict in his country.

"I have come really to bring the unnecessary war in our country to an immediate end, and I hope Dr. Riek Machar is ready to see my point," said Mayardit before the talks.

Mayardit arrived in Khartoum on Monday to hold direct talks with Machar, who arrived in Khartoum on Sunday.

On June 21, the Inter-Government Authority on Development in Africa (IGAD) said in the final communique of its meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, that the rivalling South Sudanese parties will hold a round of talks in Khartoum on issues including governance, security arrangements and rehabilitation of South Sudan economy through bilateral cooperation between Sudan and South Sudan.

South Sudan has been suffering from a civil war since December 2013 between the forces loyal to Mayardit and his former vice president Machar.
