RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Antonio Denarium, governor-elect of state of Roraima of Brazil, called on Tuesday for the federal intervention in the state until February 2019.

The intervention started on Monday and will last until December 31, when the current government ends. It is up to the next president whether to extend it.

Denarium will take office in the state on January 1. Like other local authorities, he attributes the crisis in the state's finance, public security and prison system largely to an increase in the Venezuelan immigration.

Roraima borders Venezuela and has, in the past two years, received tens of thousands of immigrants. Though the federal government started to move some of them to other regions in Brazil, the majority of the immigrants remain in Roraima.

So far, the federal government refused to close the Venezuelan border, but Denarium said he has discussed the situation with President-elect Jair Bolsonaro and called for better border control.

"We need to control the entry of Venezuelans in Brazil. They need to present passports, vaccinations and other documents," Denarium said.
