ADEN, Yemen, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- At least four members of the newly-recruited security forces were killed Thursday morning in a car bombing against a police station in Yemen's southern port city of Aden, a government official told Xinhua.

"A car loaded with explosives struck the police station based in Sheikh Othman neighborhood of Aden province, causing a huge explosion that rocked the city," the local government source said on condition of anonymity.

Initial information indicate that around four newly-recruited security soldiers were killed and nearly 20 others injured during the explosion, said the source.

He added that "a number of residential buildings located in the neighboring area of targeted police station were partially affected."

A police officer told Xinhua that "a car loaded with explosives struck the main gate of the police station in Sheikh Othman early in the morning of the day."

"The explosion occurred while the soldiers were gathering to make their attendance before leaving to the workplaces in the city's checkpoints," said the police source.

A number of police vehicles were damaged inside the targeted police station in Sheikh Othman neighborhood of Aden, according to eyewitnesses.

Local residents said that a number of police vehicles were deployed around the bombing site following the incident.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the car bomb attack, but the security source blamed it on extremist groups.

Yemeni government officials, including high-ranking security commanders and intelligence officers, have been the prime targets in attacks by unknown gunmen during the past months.

Considered Yemen's temporary capital, Aden is where the Saudi-backed Yemeni government has based itself since 2015.

The impoverished Arab country has been locked into a civil war since late 2014, when Shiite Houthi rebels overran much of the country and seized all northern provinces, including the capital Sanaa.
