ANKARA, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Turkish security forces have neutralized one of the most wanted members of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in northern Iraq, semi-official Anadolu Agency reported on Monday.

Ayfer Kordu, who was wanted in Ankara's Red Notice, was neutralized last month in the Qandil region in a "pinpoint operation" launched by Turkish planes and intelligence forces, sources who asked to remain anonymous were quoted as saying.

Kordu, codenamed Bese Erzincan, was head of the female branch of the PKK, according to the report.

Turkish authorities often use the word "neutralize" in their statements to imply that the terrorists in question either surrendered or were killed or captured.

The PKK, which has launched a military campaign against Ankara for more than 30 years, is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the EU.

The PKK often use northern Iraq as a base to plan cross-border terror attacks in Turkey.
