HONG KONG, July 17 (Xinhua) -- Asia-Pacific countries reported more COVID-19 cases on Friday as India became the third country to surge past 1 million infections.

India reported 34,956 new cases on Friday, taking the total cases to 1,003,832, according to the latest data issued by federal health ministry.

The ministry announced 687 new deaths across the country, bringing the death toll to 25,602.

It was the highest single day spike in the number of fresh cases in the country so far.

The total cases in Bangladesh rose closer to the 200,000-mark, as the death toll reached 2,547.

"A total of 3,034 fresh cases were reported in the last 24 hours, taking the nationwide tally to 199,357," Senior Health Ministry official Nasima Sultana said in a briefing Friday afternoon.

In the Philippines, the total number of infections surged to 63,001 after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 1,841 new cases.

The death toll also increased to 1,660 after 17 more patients have succumbed to the viral disease, the DOH said.

In Japan's capital, the Tokyo metropolitan government reported a fresh record number of 293 daily coronavirus cases.

The latest record figure followed the previous day's record of 286, underscoring the metropolitan government's decision Wednesday to raise its virus alert level to the highest on its four-tier scale as infections are spreading.

Over the past seven days, the average daily figure of newly confirmed infections in the capital of 14 million people has topped 200.

South Korea reported 60 more cases as of 0:00 a.m. Friday local time compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 13,672.
