Drone discovery leads to large rooftop demolition
From:Shanghai Daily  |  2017-03-28 02:40

HONGKOU District government has demolished a large illegal structure, used as offices, that was hidden on a rooftop for more than two decades, officials said yesterday. Its existence was revealed by a drone.

The 2,000-square-meter structure was on top of a four-story building at 78 Xi’an Road belonging to a stock exchange owned by Zhongtai Securities.

Since the structure was well-hidden on the rooftop, it had failed to be detected by the authority for years and had served as the offices of the exchange since 2008, an official with the district government said.

It was discovered as a result of the Hongkou government using drones to carry out searches for illegal structures across the district during a citywide crackdown campaign.

The rooftop structure was initially erected by a local textile company around 1991 as a temporary structure that should have been removed within two years, an official with the subdistrict said.

The state-owned securities company bought the building in 2008 along with the rooftop structure in an auction. The stock company said the rooftop structure had featured in the price paid for the building.

A crane on the ground tore down the bulk of the illegal structure and workers then finished the job over the weekend.

Nearly 3,500 illegal buildings, covering over 200,000 square meters, have been found in Hongkou, the district government said. More than 800 of them had been demolished by this month.
