No more troops for Afghanistan this year: Obama advisor
2009-07-03 09:32

White House National Security Adviser James L. Jones said the United States will not send more troops to Afghanistan this year beyond what President Barack Obama has already promised, the Kansas City Star reported Thursday.

Back from a trip to Afghanistan, Pakistan and India, the advisor told reporters on Wednesday that he informed U.S. commanders about it during his visit to Afghanistan.

Jones said it is still possible that Obama would agree to send another 10,000 troops, but not until next year.

Obama's order to send 21,000 more troops to Afghanistan, made three months earlier, will bring total U.S. force levels in the country to 68,000 by this year-end.
